What Is Family Day Care?
Family Day Care is the care of a small group of children in the provider's home. Parents choose this form
of child care for its intimate home setting, flexible hours, consistent provider and small group size
Some homes have children of varying ages, like a large family.
Some have only toddlers, or only school-age children. Some are informal with few planned activities;
others follow planned daily schedules. Some may be full day, some may be part day,
some may offer weekend or evening care.
Nova Scotia regulations state that providers are limited to 6 children of mixed ages or 8 children
if all are of school age, including the provider's own children.
The Sackville Family Day Care Association has existed since 1980. A pilot project of the
Department of Community Services, the concept has grown to include other F.D.C. agencies in the Province.
It is a non-profit Association governed by a volunteer community Board of Directors.
Provincial financial subsidy is available to families who qualify.
